Historical Perspective

In the last century, it was a menace in a large section of the society that despite being the pivot of the family, the woman did not get the place she was entitled to. The main reason for this was the age-old evils, superstitions and narrow-mindedness towards girl child education. For the last two decades, under the women empowerment programme, sensitivity and concern have been expressed on socio-economic, political and legal issues related to women.

Women empowerment is the process of empowering women by creating awareness and self-confidence in them at all levels—physical, mental and spiritual. In general, women empowerment emphasizes only the rights of women, but there is very little awareness about duties. This is the reason our country has not been able to fully reap the benefits of “Women Empowerment” even after so many years.

The ancient Indian education system combined education with moral values. The Gurukul System was prevalent during those days, where men and women enjoyed equal rights, leading to a strong foundation of family and society. Later, during British rule, Lord Macaulay introduced an education system devoid of moral values, causing India to lose its cultural strength and pride.

How Women Empowerment Will Help

For true women empowerment, it is essential that women have a balanced sense of both duties and rights. Education must also inculcate moral and ethical values, along with awareness of our cultural heritage. Only when these are integrated into daily life can women empowerment be achieved in the true sense, helping the nation solve its many complex challenges.

Sanitary and health awareness is also an integral part of women empowerment. Girls must learn the art of living a healthy life, for a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Good health should be the highest priority. A Sanskrit verse states:
"Dharm arth kaam mokshaanaam, aarogya mul karanam"

It means that a healthy body is the basis of Dharma (righteousness), Artha (livelihood), Kama (fulfilment) and Moksha (liberation). This highlights the significance of good health in every aspect of life.

Our ancient sages strongly emphasized Yoga and Pranayama for good health and longevity. A healthy mother gives birth to a healthy child, ultimately contributing to the creation of a strong and prosperous nation.
